Dehumidifiers For Radiology and MRI Rooms

The Misdiagnosis Problem

According to a study published in BMJ Quality & Safety, nearly 800,000 Americans die or are permanently disabled due to medical misdiagnoses each year.

Another study published, found that 15 diseases account for about half the misdiagnoses, and five diseases alone (stroke, sepsis, pneumonia, venous thromboembolism, and lung cancer) caused 300,000 serious harms, or almost 40% of the total, due to clinicians failing to identify them in patients.

In the context of radiology, a study published in PMC found that errors of diagnosis (14.83 claims per 1000 person-years) are the most common generic cause of malpractice suits against radiologists, with imaging findings related to the breast being the most common cause of organ-related misdiagnosis subject to malpractice suits (4.13 claims per 1000 person-years).

Why Humidity Control Solutions Are Essential for Radiology Rooms

In healthcare settings, proper humidity and temperature control ensures high-quality imaging, and that sensitive equipment stays in excellent condition, reducing operational and maintenance costs.

Radiology rooms have important and expensive diagnostic equipment, such as X-ray machines and MRI units. High or low humidity can affect this equipment, even small changes can affect image clarity and the equipment’s durability.

Humidity control is especially important in radiological environments because it directly affects image accuracy. Images that are unclear or distorted can cause misdiagnoses, which is why maintaining precise humidity levels in radiology rooms must be a priority.

This article discusses the importance of keeping proper humidity and temperature levels. It looks at common challenges and offers cost-efficient solutions.

Precautions to Take in Film Storage and Imaging Equipment

One of the primary areas where humidity control is essential is in the storage of medical imaging films. Radiology departments often need to store both unexposed and developed films for extended periods, and each type has specific requirements to ensure image quality.

Unexposed films should be stored in places where the temperature is between 50°F and 70°F and the humidity should stay between 50% and 55%. Otherwise, the film may present flaws that can affect image quality, even before exposure.

Developed films, which are ready for review by professionals or for delivery to patients, have slightly different environmental needs. These films should be stored in temperatures between 64°F and 75°F, with a humidity range of 55% to 60%. Following these guidelines not only ensures that the films retain optimal contrast and clarity but also prevents unnecessary replacements and maintains operational efficiency.

High humidity, above 60%, can negatively affect the contrast in X-ray films, which may lead to inaccurate readings. This is especially problematic, even the smallest detail can be critical to an accurate diagnosis. If humidity falls below 40%, static electricity can build up on the film, creating unwanted marks on the images. These unwanted marks can distort the image, making it challenging for imaging specialists to interpret results accurately.

Another significant concern is condensation on imaging equipment itself. MRI machines, X-ray units, and other sensitive devices are at risk of moisture build-up when humidity is not controled.

This condensation can seep into the equipment, affecting electronic components and potentially causing oxidation, corrosion, and rust. Over time, these factors can reduce equipment performance, leading to expensive repairs or even complete replacement if the damage is severe.

In turn, this results in increased costs and potential disruptions in patient care.

The Role of Thermomatic Dehumidifiers in MRI and Radiology Rooms

The use of Thermomatic dehumidifiers in MRI and radiology rooms addresses these concerns directly. Thermomatic’s dehumidifiers provide a reliable and efficient solution to maintain ideal humidity levels, effectively combatting excess moisture and creating a stable, controlled environment.

Our advanced technology provides precise humidity control, keeping levels within the optimal range to maintain image quality and extend equipment life. With Thermomatic’s dehumidifiers, healthcare facilities can protect valuable imaging equipment from harmful effects of humidity, like oxidation, corrosion, and rust.

The controlled environment not only extends the equipment’s durability but also reduces the likelihood of performance issues, resulting in fewer maintenance needs and lower repair costs. Reduced repair frequency translates to significant cost savings, freeing up resources for other critical areas of patient care.

In addition, Thermomatic dehumidifiers contribute to smoother, constant workflow by minimizing the risk of equipment malfunctions.

Benefits of Investing in Humidity and Temperature Control

Humidity control is not only about equipment preservation but also plays a pivotal role in enhancing patient care. High-quality imaging results are the cornerstone of accurate medical diagnoses, and maintaining a controlled environment in radiology rooms ensures these results remain reliable. By reducing the risk of artifacts and other image distortions caused by fluctuating humidity levels, healthcare providers can offer patients more accurate diagnoses and faster results.

Moreover, patients benefit from cleaner, safer radiological environments. Excessive humidity can encourage the growth of mold, bacteria, and other microorganisms, which pose health risks in any setting, but especially in healthcare facilities.

In summary, implementing humidity and temperature control solutions with Thermomatic dehumidifiers in radiology and MRI rooms offers a range of benefits.

From preserving imaging equipment and reducing operational costs to improving workflow efficiency and supporting high standards of patient care, Thermomatic’ solutions provide a reliable way to maintain the stability required for top-quality healthcare environments.
